Chowhound's
Tristate Region Message Board January

Locals might remember this
place as the Retreat, but more recently it
was a "guns 'n' ammo" joint. It's near the
now defunct Dollhouse on Route 28. The refurbished
interior is warm and homey, with freshly varnished
pine walls and great light fixtures made out
of buckets. I've eaten here a few times now--the
first time, a cheeseburger the size of my
head garnished with a huge pile of crispy,
hand-cut french fries. The next day(!), my
fiance and I returned to try the pulled barbecue--we
both opted for the sandwich "sampler," three
separate sandwiches of pulled pork, turkey
and beef on artisan rolls served with macaroni
or potato salad--an incredible value at $10.50.
My favorite was the pulled pork, sweet, tender--and
we had enough left over for lunch AND dinner
the next day!
Now, the macaroni salad is very good, but
the real star here is the roasted potato salad,
flavored with whole-grain mustard and rosemary--amazing.
We returned with friends a few weeks later
for dinner and sampled hush puppies with maple
butter and pillowy sourdough onion rings.
Mmmmmmmm.
If you have to bring non-carnivore friends,
they do offer a delicious chopped salad with
goat cheese ($4.50) and a grilled vegetable
and Gruyere cheese wrap ($7.50).
Thankfully, a beer lover is behind the scenes
somewhere, offering a great selection of bottled
beers (including the Belgian-style Hennepin
from Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY)
as well as Becks, Brooklyn Pilsner and Sam
Adams Winter Ale on tap.
And what can I say about the service? Everyone
is genuinely friendly and helpful, from prompt
refills on drinks to chasing down forgetful
patrons with hats and gloves. |
