Aromas embrace guests as they walk in. Before you are even seated, the appetite has been whetted. By the time you actually have a menu in front of you, it is difficult to narrow down your choices. You will want one of everything.

If you are looking for a good place to have corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day in the Hudson Valley, go to Hickory Smokouse BBQ on Route 28 in Kingston. We have been going here for take-out since we moved here in 2003. We ate here on St. Patrick’s Day last year. It was delicious!
The comfort food is really tasty, and there are way too many temptations on the menu–pulled pork, ribs, beef brisket, sourdough onion rings, quesadilla, and it goes on. Even though the barbecue meat is their specialty, the salads are the freshest salads I’ve tasted around here…

Whoever said that the primal art of barbecue is mainly a guy thing never attended the Hudson Valley RibFest at the Ulster County Fairgrounds in New Paltz.
It matters little that it’s all centered around a pit, where fattened hogs doused in sauce become the object of appeal. Or even if it requires a harsh eating technique to rip the meat from the bones and a load of toothpicks to scrape the residual from one’s teeth.
Who cares if fingers get coated with gooey, red sauce that drips onto clothing.

Get into the Wing of Things

Absolutely no chickens are allowed at the Cantine Field grounds today—at least, not the cowardly, human kind.
Yeah, there’ll be plenty of chicken wings to go around at the 5th annual Wing Fling in Saugerties, but make no bones about it. Some of the fixin’s offered today are not for the faint of heart. A few of them will be so hot that they’re bound to ruffle your feathers and give you goose bumps. Others might get you squawking and clucking.
A case in point: Whoever heard of peanut-butter-and-jelly wings?
Steve Slutsky, one of the 20 participating restaurateurs, plans to re-introduce them today at the popular Chamber of Commerce event outside the Kiwanis Ice Arena.

Road Trip

I was on a weekend road trip to the Borscht Belt and had dinner at a popular barbecue place outside of Kingston.
It seemed like a wonderful idea on a cool but sunny day, and the place had come highly recommended.
The Hickory Barbecue & Smokehouse, on the Onteora Trail (Route 28) in the Catskill town of Ulster, is a family enterprise that was opened in the early ’70s by Michael and Carol Slutzky — known at the restaurant as “Doc Hickory” and “Ma Hickory.”
